Financial Storyteller on Typepad: Why you should be thinking about twitter part 1 of 2

  • Dave Macdonald · 9 months ago
Stewart, I was doing much the same as you before I settled down. The issue I found with Twitter was that it was full of early adopters who have this "etiquette" of following - you follow me, I'll follow you and we'll have more followers! And every one of them is a social media expert.

I've taken the same approach you have and it's been incredibly valuable. The number of followers I have isn't high and, frankly, I'm surprised even that many people are interested in what I have to say. I follow people who interest me and add value in some way. The integration for me is that it melds my personal and professional interests in a way that LinkedIn and even Facebook don't - each of those sway to professional personal, respectively.

Stay tuned for Part 2, but I have to agree that what I call the 'false
etiquette' of following back is curious. I'd rather people take the time to
consider whether or not they want to follow back rather than do so
automatically. By doing so automatically I know I'm really just a statistic
    in their mind!
